Google’s Biggest Problem Is Still Fragmentation [SIGH]

Admitting the problem is the first step to fixing it. It’s stage one of every (if not most) rehab programs and it’s the first stage in rehabilitating Android from Google. Bloomberg Technology details how Google is attempting to wrestle with manufacturers for their global 1.4 billion strong user base. In higher education this is a major happening that needs to be monitored closely as it has a direct impact on the BYOD/BYOx conversation and secondary conversations such as wireless presentation.

Bloomberg covers the carrot and stick approach here.

Losing The Email War? A Strategy For Winning Again.

I threw my white flag up at email a long time ago. I pride myself on not being a Pavlovian slave to phone calls but email? It’s lost the war to instant messaging and social media. My horror stories are many and abound. The time that the bottomless pit called Gmail said full and I decided to delete all emails with attachments larger than 10Mb. Or the time I just looked at the red notification on my iPhone with its 13,000+ unread emails and marked all as read just to make myself feel better… needless to say neither incident leaves proud flag waving as the outcome. Betty Liu’s conversation with Tom Patterson, CEO and the founder of Tommy John undershirts for men brings out perhaps the most novel strategy for success that should be discussed and considered.

She details the conversation here.

The Formula for Perfect Productivity?

I’ve often wondered if it’s generational or if it’s just me with my inability to work the long, arduous stretches of those that came before me. It turns out that science has something to say about productivity. TL;DR: the perfect productivity ratio? 17 for 52.

It’s an oldie but a goodie that you can read at the Atlantic here.

Lighting In The Classroom – Often Imitated; Never Duplicated

The democratization of audio visual technologies through the broad adoption of residential services has resulted in many an oversimplification in the industry. Everyone has a LCD TV hooked up to some source device with HDMI right? How hard can doing the same for a classroom be? Plus we need it fast and cheap! The result in 2016 with most higher education audio visual services falling under an IT department? Sound reinforcement is minimized. Microphone selection and placement for video conferences is overlooked. Furniture is ignored. Lighting is perhaps (and ironically) invisible. The The Huffington Post has published a great article on the impact of lighting in the classroom that again underscores the importance of wider critical thought that needs to be put into your audio visual strategies, systems and dynamics.

TL;DR: “…a new study published in the journal Optics Express this week, suggests that dynamic lighting can support students’ performance in classrooms.”
